Independent journalism can counter tyranny, say the Nobel Peace Prize winners

2021 was a momentous year for journalism. Maria Ressa and Dmitry Muratov shared the year’s Nobel Peace Prize and they are the first journalists since 1935 to win it.

Both the courageous journalists have long been fighting for the freedom of expression of journalists in countries where reporters have been at the receiving end of attacks and harassment.

They believe that the best way to let independent journalism survive is to protect the reporters better and stand up for them against governments that target them. According to Maria and Dmitry, this is the best way to counter tyranny by authoritarian governments.
